There are many colleges and universities which do not offer an undergraduate business program. For these colleges and universities, the closest thing they offer to business would be Economics.
Is it advantageous to apply into a business program/school of a University?
If a university has both a liberal arts (LSA) school and a business school, you may want to try to get into the business school. Since that is where most businesses would do most of their recruiting. However, the business programs are also usually harder to get into then the regular college. But don’t stress about it.
So an Economics major or Finance major?
Many people debate over this issue. Economics and Finance are very similar majors. Economics tends to be more theoretical and finance tends to be more practical. Some people say getting an economics major will help improve your analytical skills better and some say finance majors are more related to the business world. In my opinion taking either will probably won’t matter much, if you work hard and excel in what you study.
At top Universities (University of Chicago, Northwestern University, many of the Ivys and top liberal art colleges) which do not have an undergraduate business school, but offers an Economics major, you definitely won’t go wrong if you decide to major in Economics at these schools. And you will also do just a well if you go to a great University that does offer an undergraduate business school (NYU Stern, University of Michigan Ross, University of Pennsylvania Wharton, etc).
Choosing an Economics major at a great school or Finance major at great undergraduate business school in the end you’ll probably still have similar great opportunities after college. Again this shouldn’t be something you should over stress about it. So choose a college which you feel would be best for you.
