Make sure you have taken the required tests (SAT, SAT IIs, ACT, or TOEFL (for international students). Check your specific university website for details and which they require. Keep in mind there are a limited number of times you can take it in a school year. And that there are also no testing dates during the summer. Most universities or colleges usually accept either SAT or ACT scores. Many of the more selective colleges, require you to take 3 SAT IIs in addition to your SAT or ACT.
